After abruptly quitting her job because of her boss, single parent Jill Mason takes her eight-year-old daughter, Lizzie, on a ski vacation in Breckenridge, Colorado for a break from their home life in Virginia. But once the Russian army marches into the city, her normal life vanishes. The city is bombed, and freedoms she took for granted evaporate overnight. A lifestyle full of severe restrictions immediately descends on her under the new Taliban rule.

The girl's  loss is compounded when her father joins the rebels and she and her family's lives are threatened. With his new associations and new-found power, her father changes into an abusive and controlling man she doesn't recognize.

Suffering from shock and depression, she grasps at the chance to flee  in secret with her mother and grandmother. They engage on a perilous journey across Afghanistan for the whispered promise of a better life in America.
